I used to reach for my phone every time life went quiet — in queues, during TV, whenever I had a spare minute. Then I stopped. What surprised me wasn't how much time I got back, but what happened when I learned to be alone with my own thoughts again.

Every time someone tells me "we're all a little bit autistic", I smile politely... while mentally composing the response I wish I'd said. This is why that phrase, however well-intentioned, gets autism so wrong.
